Where to Mount a Home EV Charger: Location, Cable Reach and Access

A practical reference for choosing, installing and using a home EV charger.

Illustration of home EV charging

Where you mount a home charger affects how easy it is to use every day, how well the cable reaches your car and how much installation work is needed. The best location balances convenience with the practical needs of wiring, access and local code.

Start with the parking spot

Stand where the car parks and imagine plugging in. The EVIQO cable is 25 ft long, which gives useful reach, but the location of the car's charge port matters. The charger should be close enough that the cable reaches the port without stretching or lying across a walkway. Check where the port sits on your vehicle, since it may be at the front, rear or side.

Keep the wiring run short

A hardwired charger connects to a circuit that runs from the electrical panel. The closer the charger is to the panel, the shorter and less costly the wire run will be. Ask your electrician whether a wall near the panel is a better choice than a distant spot, even if that spot is slightly less convenient for parking.

Mounting height and clearance

Mount the charger at a height that keeps the connector and cable off the ground and easy to reach. Leave clearance around the unit for access, cable handling and future service. Avoid spots where a car door, a cart or a snow shovel could strike the charger regularly.

Cable management

The cable should hang or rest without being pinched, kinked or run through a door. A holster or hook helps keep the connector off the floor. Avoid routing the cable where it will be driven over repeatedly or where water can pool.

Indoor or outdoor

A garage is a common choice because it offers shelter and convenient access to the electrical panel. Outdoor mounting is also common, but check the product documentation for the intended installation environment before you mount the unit. Where possible, choose a spot that avoids standing water and direct exposure to weather.

Local code and community rules

Local code may set minimum distances from doors, windows or other equipment, and some locations have specific placement requirements. If you rent or live in a community with an association, you may need approval before mounting anything on the exterior of the building. Check those requirements early in the planning process.

How this applies to EVIQO chargers

All five EVIQO chargers come with a 25 ft cable, which makes it practical to mount the unit near the parking spot while still reaching the charge port. The hardwired 48A (11.5 kW) models depend on a dedicated circuit, so placing the unit near the panel can simplify the wire run. Plug-in 40A (9.6 kW) NEMA 14-50 models need an accessible outlet within reach of the cable and a suitable location for the charger's connector when it is not in use.
